This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru told the Lok Sabha on March 31 that he was certain, as anything could be certain, that the islands of Matsu and Quemoy should go to the mainland of China and he thought the attitude of certain powers in this connection was extraordinary. Mr. Nehru, who was initiating a debate on the demands for grants in respect of the External Affairs Ministry, said, although he did not think that there was any immediate danger of war, "the situation generally has hardened and has become difficult for a solution. Things are happening which might well lead to a worsening of the situation, with catastrophic results." Dealing with Formosa and the offshore islands, the Prime Minister said: "There has been a general agreement, a very wide agreement, on one obvious fact, and that is the islands of Matsu and Quemoy, five or six miles of the mainland, are definitely part of the mainland and any enemy force there is a constant irritation and constant danger. Countries which are not friendly to the People's Government of China have recognised the fact at least and yet the occupation of Quemoy and Matsu continues by other forces. It is stated that if the Chinese People's Government attacks them, the whole force of one of the mighty powers will be engaged in defending them, because it is said they might involve the security of that great power. That is very extraordinary."
