Academy chief not in favour of Kodava script

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, MARCH 31. The Karnataka Kodava Academy will set up a museum if the Government hands over "Sunny Side," the residence of General K.S. Thimmaiah, to the academy, Dotty Poovaiah, who assumed charge as President of the academy, has said.

She was speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday after assuming charge from the outgoing President, Chiriyapanda Raja Nanjappa. The museum will house artefacts and antique pieces that reflect Kodava culture and give a complete picture of the Kodava tradition, she said. M. Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister, has appealed to the State Government to hand over the building to the academy to make it a memorial.

On a new script for Kodava, Ms. Poovaiah said she is not in favour of it. Presently, Kannada script is being used for the Kodava language. Efforts made in the past by scholars to devise a new script for Kodava did not work, she added. On the Kodava lexicon project, she said she will convene a meeting of the members of the academy in 10 days before taking a decision on the project.

Ms. Poovaiah said she will pressure the Government to include Kodava in the VIII Schedule of the Constitution. She was part of the previous body of the academy which had urged the Government to take up the issue with the Centre.

She said she will accord priority to translating important Kannada works into Kodava and organise Kodava "Aat-Pat" programmes on folklore.

Muddiada Kusha, Nanamanda Venu, Nagesh Kalur, Palera Rani Appanna, Koopadira Sundari Machaiah and Kalimada Motaiah, new members of the academy, were present.
