Hubli
By Our Staff Correspondent
HUBLI, MARCH 31. The bandh call given by traders' associations against the introduction of value added tax (VAT) from tomorrow evoked a mixed response in Hubli and Dharwad. While some traders closed their shops, others did not respond to the bandh call. As a result, most shops and commercial establishments were seen doing business as usual. The Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry has already welcomed the implementation of VAT and made it clear that it would not participate in the bandh. But merchants of electrical and electronic goods kept their shops closed. On Wednesday, they had taken out a procession to the tahshildar's office and submitted a memorandum against the implementation of VAT. They demanded that some time be given before VAT is implemented so that they can make the necessary preparations for the new regime.
Procession
Our Shimoga Special Correspondent reports: The bandh call given here on Thursday to protest against the introduction of VAT from Friday evoked mixed response. Only shops and business establishments located in Gandhi Bazaar and Nehru Road remained closed. Traders took out a procession and presented a memorandum to the district administration. The president of the Traders' Association, B.J. Mariappa, M. Harinath Kothi, Sajjanraj Jain, M.J. Murali and Nagaraj Gupta led the demonstration. The bandh call evoked an encouraging response in Bhadravati, according to reports reaching here.
Bandh total
Our Sirsi Correspondent reports: A total bandh was observed in Sirsi town today in response to the bandh call given by Sirsi Kirani Dalal and Merchants' Association. A memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, was submitted to the Assistant Commissioner, Noor Mansur, by the association president, G.G. Hegde Kadekodi. The memorandum urged the Chief Minister to intervene and defer the implementation of VAT.
Good response

Merchants' associations had given the bandh call. Shopkeepers downed the shutters of their establishments in Karwar. The police had made security arrangements.
