Erode
By Our Staff Reporter
ERODE, MARCH 31. All details, required by the Government regarding upgradation of the municipality as corporation by including the nearby third-grade municipalities, have already been sent, the Municipal Chairman, M. Subramanian, said. He was replying to R, Arjunan, an Independent Councillor at the Council meeting today. The Chairman said that some years ago, it was decided to construct a spacious municipal office building, meeting hall and parking lot within the municipal office compound. But the Council resolved to take up the matter after three years and it was due now. He suggested that the old office building could be demolished and a multi-storeyed building be constructed. The councillors welcomed the decision and wanted the Chairman to begin the preliminary works by sanctioning funds in the budget.
Poor quality water
Radhamani Bharathy, another Independent Councillor, complained that some persons were marketing poor quality water in 25 litre cans and small sachets. She wanted the Health Department to take severe action against the sellers. The AIADMK Councillor, Nagarathinam, said that some persons were selling water with bogus ISI seal and he wanted the officials to take stringent action against those who produced such water sachets. The officials assured the council that they would take action in this regard. The Vice-Chairman, Market N. Raja of the AIADMK, said that basic amenities were lacking at the Municipal Nethaji Market. He asked the municipal officials to provide proper toilet and water facilities. Another AIADMK Councillor, N. Rajkumar, complained that a number of signboards at the Municipal Bus Stand and on the Municipal Railway Colony HSS premises were placed without the permission of the municipal administration. The Chairman asked the officials to remove such boards and other encroachments. The AIADMK Councillor, P. Gopal, staged a walkout from the council, five minutes before the conclusion of the meeting, opposing the chairman's refusal to allow the mediapersons to photograph and videograph the proceedings.
