56 schoolchildren discharged
TUMKUR
MARCH 31.
All the 56 schoolchildren who were admitted to the General Hospital here on Wednesday have been discharged. The children were among the 73 who were taken ill after having midday meal at the Government School at Honnudike near here. Sources in the hospital told The Hindu here on Thursday that the children responded well to the treatment and all of them are out of danger. The school has a strength of 150 and more than 60 per cent of them were taken ill. Of the 52 children brought to the hospital in the first batch, 48 were critical and were admitted as in-patients. Of the others who were treated at the Primary Health Centre at Hoonudike, eight were found to be in a critical state and were brought to the hospital here. Six students were admitted to private hospitals. K.S. Ningappa, Chief Executive Officer, Tumkur Zilla Panchayat, said a senior officer of the Department of Education conducted a probe into the incident and "a report will be handed over to the panchayat." "A decision has been taken to suspend from service those responsible for the incident such as the headmaster of the school, teachers in charge of the scheme, cooks and the assistants," he said.
Ban order extended
MANGALORE
MARCH 31.
The Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate, Arvind Shrivastava, has further extended ban orders under Section 144 of the Cr.PC until 8 a.m. on April 15. A press release from the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday stated that a decision to this effect has been taken based on a report submitted by the Superintendent of Police, Soumendhu Mukherjee. The District Magistrate had initially imposed ban orders from 7 a.m. on March 24 to 8 a.m. on March 28 in wake of problems that arose on the evening of March 24 following a rally organised by some organisations. The ban orders were extended for a second time on March 28 from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. on March 31. The third extension comes on a request from the police authorities. Mr. Shrivastava stated that the ban orders will be applicable throughout the district. The orders will not be applicable to any official function being organised with due permission from the District Magistrate, assistant commissioners or taluk magistrates. It will also not be applicable for marriage, funeral and religious processions organised with permission.
New Railway scheme
HUBLI
March 31.
A new scheme called `Premium Registration Scheme' introduced by the Indian Railways will become operational from April 1. The new scheme, according to a press note issued by the South Western Railway here, has been introduced to meet the demand for the quick supply of wagons and is applicable to the "non-programmed" traffic. It will not be applicable for traffic booked under Class 230 and Class 240 of the General Classification of Goods. Under the scheme, preference will be given over other traffic within the same class of priority and the consigner who is willing to opt for this will have to pay the extra freight as per rules. A non-adjustable/non-refundable service charge of Rs. 100 will also be levied at the time of registration in addition to the wagon registration fee. The consignor who registers his indent under the scheme will not be permitted to change over to normal priority. The scheme will be in operation for one year. Explosives: hunt on for accused
PUTTUR
MARCH 31.
The police have intensified efforts to capture Aadi alias A.B. Matthew of Ernakulam, prime accused in the recovery of explosives from Mura Shantinagar on the outskirts of Puttur on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the court has remanded Umarabba alias Kote Umar arrested in this connection in police custody for a day to facilitate investigation. Sanjeeva Naik, Puttur Rural Circle Inspector, said a police team headed by A.S. Rao, Puttur Assistant Superintendent of Police, posing as customers laid a trap for Umarabba based on a tip-off that he was illegally selling explosives. Umarabba who was arrested near Nelyadi led the police team to Mura Shantinagar where the explosives were kept. Mr. Naik said the police recovered detonators and pencil gelatin from the place. Stating that Umarabba was selling explosives to quarry owners, he said they will be able to gather more details about the entire operation once they arrest Matthew. A case has been registered under the Explosives Substances Act against Umarabba for storing explosives illegally.
