Heart-wrenching

Sir, — The Terri Schiavo case highlights how a person of diminished capacity is helpless in the face of the powers that be. Her pitiable situation has shown that in these material times outrage can be marketed; and misery can be a field day for political opportunism and judicial activism. Starving her is judicial homicide and a fate worse than that reserved for prisoners on the death row.

Sugeeta Roy Choudhury,
Pune

Sir, — On the issue of right to life and right to death, Mahatma Gandhi said: "The question may legitimately be put to me, would I apply to human beings the principles I have enunciated in connection with the calf [the killing of which Gandhi allowed in Sabarmati ashram]? Would I like them to be applied in my own case? My reply is yes. If I am unable to render any aid and recovery is out of question and the patient is lying unconscious in the throes of agony, then I would not see any himsa [violence] in putting an end to his suffering by death."

It is time to support the decision of Terri's husband and the court to put an end to her agony.

Sathia Krishnamoorthy,
East Taunton, Massachusetts
