KEY BISCAYNE, MARCH 31. Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo moved a round closer to the Nasdaq-100 Open title, and the No. 1 ranking, by beating Ana Ivanovic of Serbia and Montenegro 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Mauresmo, who spent five weeks at No. 1 last year, can regain the top ranking if she wins the tournament and beats a top-five player in one of her final two matches. Lindsay Davenport, who skipped the hard-court tournament to protect her troublesome knees, has been No. 1 since October. "Of course I would love to get it back," the Frenchwoman said. "But having had it once, it's pretty different. My goals are somewhere else. Doing well in these big events is today more important to me."
Bhupathi-Woodbridge crash out
Fifth-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and his Australian partner Todd Woodbridge crashed out of the men's doubles event, losing to Jonas Bjorkman and Belarussian Max Mirnyi 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
Men: David Ferrer bt Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 6-3; Rafael Nadal bt Thomas Johansson 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles: Jonas Bjorkman/Max Mirnyi bt Mahesh Bhupathi/Todd Woodbridge 6-4, 7-6 (8).
Women: Amelie Mauresmo bt Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 6-4; Kim Clijsters bt Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-1. AP
