Christopher Marquis advances

By Our Special Corespondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 31. The third-seeded Christopher Marquis started on a wrong note but recovered in time to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Farhod Saidov of Tajikistan in the first round of the ITF Asian under-14 tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Thursday.

In his anxiety to get off to a roaring start, Marquis tended to overhit, but once he settled down he was able to challenge his tall and strong opponent with competence.

Coach T. Chandrasekaran, with the onerous task of keeping track of the ten Indian players, was quite happy that Marquis and the rest had given a good account of themselves in the first round. Eight of them progressed to the pre-quarterfinals, with Shweta Kumari Solanki looking in good touch as she raced past Ting Fei Juan of Chinese Taipei for the loss of just two games.

While most were trying to power their way through, the 12-year-old Yuki Bhambri opted to operate with precision and placement as he beat Syrian Abdulnour Bronou.

Of course, none fought as well as Rashmi Teltumde, but the Mumbai girl went down 7-5, 6-7(1), 5-7 to Karyn Emeralda of Indonesia in a thriller where both played their shots freely.

The other Indian to lose was Sameer Paranjape as he ran into the top-seeded Pattrayu Chumpetch of Thailand.
