LAGOS (Nigeria): Anti-corruption agents in Nigeria have detained the country's police chief, who resigned earlier this month amid charges he had stolen millions of dollars in public funds, an official said on Thursday. Tafa Balogun resigned on March 6 after Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused him of stealing more than 1 billion naira ($7.4 million). Mr. Balogun, who directed the West African nation's police force for three years, was arrested at his home in Lagos, a senior commission official said. He will be held until he appears in court, the official added. The commission said the stolen money had been deposited in 11 bank accounts. The official said the commission would detain Mr. Balogun at its offices in Lagos until he goes to trial. It did not say how long that was likely to take. AP
