Indian women lose to New Zealand

DURBAN, MARCH 31. Skipper Mithali Raj and Anjum Chopra's superb knocks failed to save the blushes as India lost to New Zealand by 16 runs in a women's World Cup match at the Technikon grounds in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Chasing a modest total of 184, India failed to capitalise on a 91-run partnership for the third wicket between Mithali and Anjum to end up at 168 for nine in its 50 overs. The Indian captain made 52 off 102 balls, while Anjum's contribution was 48 (100b).

This defeat was the first in four matches and leaves India in fourth place behind Australia, New Zealand and England. India will now have to beat the West Indies on Friday for a place in the semifinals.
