Natwar Singh on a pilgrimage

MANGALORE MARCH 31. The Minister for External Affairs, Natwar Singh, today visited temples in Dakshina Kannada. After arriving at Mangalore airport, Mr. Singh took a helicopter to Kukke Subramanya and offered pujas to the presiding deity. Along with his wife, he also visited the Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kateel. On Friday, Mr. Singh will take a flight from Bangalore to Delhi. Mr. Singh told presspersons he was on a family tour of temples in the district.

Mr. Singh will visit Sri Mookambika Temple at Kollur in Udupi district on Friday morning. The Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, told The Hindu Mr. Singh will travel by helicopter from Dharmasthala and arrive at Kollur at 10 a.m. Sources in the temple said here today that Mr. Singh will offer special prayers and participate in the "ratharohana'' celebrations. Mr. Bhatt said Mr. Singh will leave Kollur by helicopter to reach Bangalore at 1 p.m. Sources said the annual "rathotsava'' celebrations of the temple will start at 5 p.m.

Jakhar to visit Hubli

HUBLI March 31. The Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Balram Jakhar, will be here on Saturday on a two-day visit. Mr. Jakhar, who will arrive by train on Saturday morning, will participate in a meeting of the Bharat Krishak Samaj at Hotel Naveen here at 7 p.m. on the same day. He is scheduled to return to Bhopal on Sunday afternoon by an aircraft owned by the Madhya Pradesh Government.

Probe into textbook loads

TUMKUR MARCH 31. There was commotion for nearly two hours at Yellapura, near here, on Thursday following the detection of four lorries carrying school textbooks for the next academic year. The lorries were first found by villagers, who alerted the police and presspersons. They were parked and members of their crew were seen exchanging stocks among themselves. A government-owned printing press is located beyond Yellapura. The drivers of the lorries produced invoices for 22,514 textbooks for Dharwad district, 25,860 for Chitradurga, 48,533 for Bangalore and for a certain number of Hindi books. Some books in two lorries did not have the printer's name and address while the other books were found to have been printed at the Government Press. The police are investigating.

Jail term for tax official

BANGALORE MARCH 31. The Special Judge for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases, P. Krishna Bhat, has sentenced S.G. Gopalakrishna, a former official of the Income Tax Department official to three years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed on him a fine of Rs. 10,000 for accepting bribes. According to a CBI press release, Gopalakrishna was arrested in November 1997 while accepting bribe from T.H. Dharma, an agent of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), for issuing a refund order towards tax deducted at LIC's Arasikere branch.

`Relay hunger strike' continues

BELLARY March 31. The "relay hunger strike" launched by the members of the Bellary Bar Association demanding that Bellary district be brought under the proposed Circuit Bench of the Karnataka High Court in Hubli Dharwad entered the second day on Thursday. Members of Bar associations are of the opinion that the district should not be brought under the proposed Circuit Bench in Gulbarga in view of the distance to that city and the lack of transport facilities.

Two girls drown, one saved

GULBARGA March 31. Two teenaged girls drowned in a pit in a granite mine at Pastapur village in Chincholi taluk near Sulepet on Thursday. According to reports, Changlabai and Hampibai Rathod (both 18), from Chaklanaik tanda and Venktalapur tanda in Chincholi taluk, who had gone to wash clothes, slipped into the pit and drowned. Puribai of Chaplanaik tanda, who also slipped into the pit, was saved by a youth. The Sulepet police, which recovered the bodies of the girls, have registered a case.

`Technisium' from tomorrow

TUMKUR MARCH 31. "Technisium-2005," a national-level technical symposium, which is the 10th in a series, will be organised by the Association of Electrical Sciences of the Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT) here on Saturday. In a preview of the programme for presspersons here on Thursday, R. Vivekananda, president of the association, said 400 engineering colleges in the country were approached for participation, and technical teams from 198 responded and filed essays. Fifty-five of them have been chosen for making presentations in four parallel sessions. Among the topics are high voltage engineering in electrical science, image processing in electronics and computers, high-speed networks in communication and smart sensors in instrumentation. Prof. Vivekananda said a hobby project exhibition will be organised. One hundred inventions by students will be displayed. A student-industry interaction will be held. A number of industries have agreed to send their human resource development teams, he added. K. Balaveerareddy, Vice-Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, will inaugurate Technisium-2005.

Summer camps for children

DHARWAD March 31. A 15-day summer camp for students has been arranged at the District Bal Bbhavan from April 12.

Children interested in participating in the camp should register their names and pat the fees by April 11, according to a press note issued here.

Cooperative bank election

Hubli March 31. S.K. Marathe and V.R. Sirur have been unanimously elected president and vice-president of Hubli Urban Cooperative Bank.

Mr. Marathe has been elected president for the third time successively.

S.S. Shettar, S.G. Joshi, G.S. Hutagikar, S.B. Gokhale, and A.A. Bashi, were present during the election.

Elected

Sirsi March 31. Srikant Laxman Ghotnekar was unanimously elected president of Kanara District Central Cooperative Bank. According to an official press release, Bhaskar Hegde Kageri was elected as vice-president for the second consecutive term.

NGOs urged

to help Govt.

CHITRADURGA MARCH 31. H.Nagaraj, Vice-President of the zilla panchayat has urged non-governmental organisations to help the Government take up welfare schemes in rural regions.

Inaugurating a workshop for the representatives of NGOs from the district here on Tuesday, he called upon voluntary organisations to work hard for the uplift of society. The workshop was organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, the Information Department and the Nehru Youth Centre.

Ananthappa, coordinator of Nehru Youth Centre said that NGOs can work very effectively if grants are released properly. It is essential to distribute the grants equally among NGOs, he said. Jayamma and other officers of the Department of Health and Family Welfare participated in the camp.

Personality development

CHITRADURGA MARCH 31. A one-week personality development camp, `Vasantha-2005,' will be held for children during the summer holidays.

The camp will be on from April 25 to April 30 at Sati Vilas on National Highway 13. The camp has been organised by Iswarya group of hotels, Sati Vilas, UNESCO Club, Inner Wheel Club, District Science Centre, Chitradurga Adventure Academy, and Chintana Publishers.

Children in the age group of six years to 16 years can participate. Interested persons can register their names before April 20.

Summer camp

BANGALORE MARCH 31. Parvathamma Shamanur Shivashankarappa English Medium School, Shivagangothri, Tolahunse, Davangere, will conduct a summer coaching camp for students from April 5 to April 20. Suspended

CHITRADURGA MARCH 31. M.K. Rahaman, Sub-Inspector of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, has been placed under suspension on charges of misusing his official position, corruption and cheating.

According to an official release, two persons from Aralihalli village of Hosadurga taluk had lodged a complaint accusing Mr. Rahaman of cheating them of Rs. 50,000.

He had taken the bribe with a promise to appoint them as police constables during the recent recruitment drive in Chitradurga.

He, however, did not appoint them and refused to return the money.

B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, Chitradurga had appointed the Deputy Superintendent of Reserve Police to look into the complaint. On the basis of the inquiry report, the suspension order was issued on Tuesday, the release said.

Celebrations

Bidar March 31. Babu Jagjivan Ram's 98th birthday will be celebrated in Bidar on April 5.

The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, will inaugurate the celebrations at his office. The heads of government offices will follow him and celebrate the anniversary by garlanding Jagjivan Ram's photograph.

Officials will also participate in a rally across the city. A lecture series has been organised at the Rang Mandir at 10 a.m.

Members of the Zilla Madiga Samaj have demanded that the Government install a statue of the late leader as soon as possible, a release said.

Indira, Professor of Sociology of the University of Mysore, has been given a senior fellowship by Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, to conduct research on gender equity issues in primary education. MOODBIDRI MARCH 31. Cooperatives societies of Moodbidri are getting ready to protest against the alleged "anti-people" attitude of an official of the Department of Cooperation.

The former Minister K. Amarnath Shetty told presspersons on Thursday that the Assistant Registrar of the department at Moodbidri has been acting as if he is an agent of a particular political party. In the recent elections to a cooperative society, the official had allegedly canvassed for political party. The cooperatives will be staging a dharna in front of the office of the Registrar of Cooperative societies at Mangalore on Saturday.
