BMS fears anti-labour reforms

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MARCH 31. The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) today took an aggressive stand against the Centre's anti-labour policies. It said that the "honeymoon" period — a reasonable time granted to the Manmohan Singh Government — was over and that all legislation going against the organised and unorganised labour would be opposed tooth and nail.

Addressing a press conference here to announce the Golden Jubilee Year annual convocation, the BMS all India general secretary, Uday Rao Patwardhan, said he feared that the Government could soon initiate the reforms that could compromise on labour rights. He criticised the Left parties for making compromises on important issues such as the amendments to the Patent Act and described it as alarming.

Pointing out that the past two Budgets had been inflationary, leaving a shortfall of over Rs. 28,000 crores which would add to inflation, Mr. Patwardhan said that a rise in the Centre's expenditure of Rs. 15,000 crores and a cut in the State's share would adversely impact the success of welfare programmes.
