TN wins men's title

MUMBAI, MARCH 31 . Tamil Nadu defeated Maharashtra 3-0 in the men's team final of the 34th Senior National & Inter-State carrom championships. Hyderabad clinched the women's crown with a similar scoreline against Assam at the Andheri Sports Complex.

International Kubendra Babu rose to the occasion for Tamil Nadu, defeating talented Sanjay Mande in the second tie. S. Ganeshan and I. Saktivel won the other two matches.

Hyderabad was similarly helped by India number three K. Suvarna in its ranks, defeating Sharmila Borah in the decider for the women's team title against Assam, surprising Manipur 2-1 enroute to the final.

The results (all finals): Inter-State team: Men: Tamil Nadu bt Maharashtra 3-0 (S. Ganeshan bt Nandu Sonawane 25-22, 25-12; D. Kubendra Babu bt Sanjay Mande 25-15, 9-25, 25-19; I. Sakthivel bt Sanjay Nagaonkar 25-0, 25-0).

Inter-State: women: Hyderabad bt Assam 3-0 (K. Swaroopa Rani bt Debajani Tamuli 25-19, 13-25, 25-19; V. Nagajyothi bt Borsha Barua 25-5, 21-25, 25-11; K. Suvarna bt Sharmila Borah 25-5, 25-4).

Inter-Institution Team (finals): Men: AIESCB bt IAAD 2-1 (Narsingrao Sakari bt V. Anil Kumar 25-20, 25-19; Suhas Pomedkar bt Mahesh 25-13, 25-9; V. Jaya Kumar lost to Dilesh Khedekar 17-25, 0-25).

Women: LIC bt RBI 2-1 (Nirmala Parimi bt K. Somanchi 25-23, 25-15; S. Apoorva bt Shobhavati Kumari 25-0, 25-8; P. Shilpa lost to Sangeeta Chandorkar 6-25, 23-25). — Our Special Correspondent
