THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 31. The State CPI(M) would construct 100 houses to rehabilitate the tsunami victims in Kollam and Alappuzha panchayats. This is for the first time that the party is taking up such a major project in rehabilitation. A press note issued by the CPI(M) State committee said the party had received clearance from the Government for construction of 100 houses. Of these, 70 houses would be constructed in the affected villages in Kollam and the remaining 30 houses in Alappuzha district. The houses would be constructed in the land of the victims. Of the 70 houses being built in Kollam, 60 would replace houses badly damaged in the tsunami fury. The entire cost of constructing the houses would be borne by the CPI(M). The plan for the houses would be finalised by an expert committee. Each house would have a plinth area of 430 square feet. The technical aspects of house construction would be looked after by personnel who would be deployed by the Government. The District Collectors would oversee the construction work as well as the selection of beneficiaries.
