Warm reception to Gayoom

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 31. The President of the Republic of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who arrived here on a two-day visit to the capital, was accorded a warm reception at the airport here.

The Governor, R. L. Bhatia, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, the Chief Secretary, Palat Mohandas, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Air Command, S. Y. Savur, the Director General of Police, Raman Srivastava, the Thiruvananthapuram District Collector, Tinku Biswal, and senior officials received him with bouquets.

The President is accompanied, among others, by his wife, Nasreena M. A. Gayoom, the Minister for Information, Arts and Culture and acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Abdulla, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Mohammed Hussein, and the High Commissioner of Maldives to India, Anbaree Abdul Sattar Adam.

The delegation will visit the Technopark, near here, tomorrow.

The Chief Minister told presspersons that he would discuss with Mr. Gayoom a proposal for setting up a Consulate of Maldives in Thiruvananthapuram, late this evening at the Raj Bhavan.

Mr. Gayoom had discussions with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in this regard earlier during his visit to the country.

The president later addressed a meeting of Maldivian expatriates in Thiruvananthapuram. A few hundred Maldivians who are resident in Thiruvananthapuram attended the meeting.
