THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 31. With the Congress Pradesh Election Authority announcing the dates for conducting organisational elections in Kerala, the Karunakaran faction has come forward with fresh demands. The faction wants the high command to disband the current KPCC and DCCs, besides withdrawing the suspension of leaders such as K. Muraleedharan and K. P. Kunhikannan. The faction is also demanding a mechanism seeking to restore the self-respect of party leaders given the manner in which the recent disciplinary action had been initiated against leaders belonging to the Karunakaran faction. The faction leaders, including the MLAs, are now looking up to the veteran leader, K. Karunakaran to protect their interests in the upcoming big fight for control over the party apparatus. The Congress MLA, M. P. Gangadharan, a prominent member of the Karunakaran group, today gave a brief idea about the current thinking in the faction.
No rationale
Addressing a press conference here, he said it would be impossible to hold organisational elections without withdrawing the suspension orders against Mr. Muraleedharan and other leaders belonging to the faction. "What is the rationale in holding elections by keeping these leaders out of the fray?" he asked. He feared that attempts would be made to influence the DROs, given the current tendency of exercising powers by the Chief Minister and his Ministers, all of whom belong to one faction. Mr. Karunakaran had earlier made a categorical statement that the organisational elections would be possible only if the suspension orders were withdrawn. His attempt is to consolidate all his MLAs and leaders left in his faction behind Mr. Muraleedharan. One of the main points that attracted attention during the faction's regional rallies was the deliberate attempts to underplay Padmaja Venugopal's role.
Meeting today
Our Staff Reporter writes from Kozhikode: The former president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) K. Muraleedharan said here today that the `I' group would not cooperate with the party elections unless the central leadership froze the existing KPCC and revoked the suspension of all the leaders. He said the group leaders would meet at the residence of the senior leader K. Karunakaran in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday to chalk out strategies in this regard.
