Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, MARCH 31. The Pondicherry Chamber of Commerce presented a memorandum to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy requesting him to postpone implementation of the value added tax (VAT) in Pondicherry until the Tamil Nadu Government implemented it. A delegation, led by the chamber president N. Govindasamy, urged the Administration to persuade the Centre to abolish Central Sales Tax (CST) as VAT and CST could not co-exist. Otherwise, the local government could pay subsidy to compensate the four per cent CST levied on industries and merchants. Pondicherry was outsourcing raw materials from other States and the CST would affect the economy of Pondicherry. Hence the Centre should be persuaded to scrap the four per cent CST, the chamber said.
