PALAKKAD, MARCH 31. The Minister for Culture, A.P. Anil Kumar, has said that the State Government will take steps to build a suitable memorial for O.V. Vijayan in his home district. Inaugurating a condolence meeting organised at Moyan L.P. School here today to pay tribute to the legendary literary figure, the Minister said he had already held discussions with the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, on establishing the memorial. Speakers at the meeting said that in his great works, particularly `Khasakinte Ithihasam,' Vijayan had portrayed the rural life of Palakkad. The Malayalam writer Eyamkode Sreedharan said Palakkad was his literary field. He was the most criticised writer in Malayalam in recent years, particularly by Leftists. But Vijayan remained a Communist throughout his life. P.A. Vasudevan, a close associate of Vijayan, said that from the oral traditions of the rural life of Palakkad he had created a known language and realised that the spoken language had greater velocity than written language. Vijayan's language has a mystical touch. He was a purely homespun writer, for his physical existence as writer was in Palakkad. The meeting was presided over by N.N. Krishnadas, MP.
