O.V. Vijayan cremated

PALAKKAD, MARCH 31. The mortal remains of the writer and cartoonist O.V. Vijayan were cremated with full State honours at Ivar Madhom near Thiruvilwamala on the banks of the Bharathapuzha at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

The funeral pyre was lit by his nephews Sooraj and Ravi Shankar (cartoonist) in the presence of a large number of people from various walks of life who thronged the Madhom since morning. His wife, Theresa Vijayan, sister O.V. Usha and close relatives were present. The State Government was represented by the Minister for Cultural Affairs, A.P. Anil Kumar. The Palakkad Collector, K. Ajayakumar, placed a wreath of flowers on the body on behalf of the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy.

A contingent of the State police paid their last respect to the legendary writer by customary gun salutes.

Those present at the cremation included the poet Akkitham; the writers M.G.S. Narayanan, U.K. Kumaran and C.V. Sreeraman; P.V. Krishnan Nair, secretary, Kerala Sahithya Academy; N.N. Krishnadas and S. Ajayakumar, MPs; V.C. Kabeer, K. Radhakrishnan and A.C. Moideen, MLAs, and the District Congress Committee president, V.S. Vijayaraghavan.

The body was placed at the Town Hall here since morning before it was taken to Ivar Madhom at 12 noon. A large number of people had lined up in front of the hall to have a last glimpse of the `master story-teller.' A large number of students from different colleges and schools in the district paid their last respect to the literary figure.

The Mathrubhumi managing director, M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP; the managing editor, P.V. Chandran; the Editor, K. Gopalakrishnan; the Malayala Manorama Resident Editor, Joy Sasthampadikal; the Bhashaposhini Editor, K.C. Narayanan; the economist P.A. Vasudevan; A.K. Balan, MLA; the Congress(S) leader Kadannappally Ramachandran; the Janata Dal(S) secretary-general, K. Krishnankutty; the CPI(M) district secretary, P. Unni; the CPI leader Jose Baby, the Kerala Folklore Academy vice-president, P. Sankaranarayanan; and others paid homage to the writer.
