Indian prisoners in Port Louis go on fast

PORT LOUIS, MARCH 31. Coinciding with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's visit to Mauritius, 32 Indian prisoners here went on a hunger-strike demanding transfer to their motherland.

The prisoners wanted to spend the rest of their term in India so that they could be close to their near and dear ones, the Mauritian daily Le Matinal reported today.

The prisoners have coincided their action with the visit of Dr. Singh, the report said, adding that they intended to continue the fast until his departure on Saturday.

It claimed that the Commissioner of Prisons and a representative of the Indian High Commission visited the prisoners. "They have promised to the prisoners that they will be returned to India very soon," the report said quoting sources.

The Indian High Commission could not be contacted. — PTI
