CHENNAI, MARCH 31. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will set up 60 new substations and around 800 circuit kilometres of extra high tension (EHT) lines under the transmission and distribution network during 2005-2006. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants to the Electricity Department, Minister for Transport and Electricity R. Viswanathan told the Assembly yesterday that during the Tenth Plan period, 315 sub-stations would be established and 4,000 circuit km of EHT lines installed. The anticipated electricity demand during 2005-2006 would be 8453 MW and the average daily consumption was expected to be 145 million units. The demand would be met from the existing generating capacity and the proposed capacity additions. A total of 25 sub-transmission and distribution improvement schemes under the Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme covering four Chennai Metropolitan circles, five distribution circles and 19 urban areas in nine distribution circles at a cost of Rs.977 crores were being implemented.
