CHENNAI, MARCH 31. More and more weavers cooperative societies are earning profits after the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Government took over in 2001,Handlooms and Textiles Minister V. Somasundaram told the Assembly today. Thanks to its efforts, 601 societies were making profits. During the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regime, only 320 societies recorded profits. "When the AIADMK was in power during 1991-96, 881 societies earned profits," Mr. Somasundaram said, winding up the discussion on demands for grants to his departments. Till the end of February 2005 handloom products to the tune of Rs. 697 crores were sold. The Government would build 1,010 houses for weavers every year.
