THRISSUR, MARCH 31. The Thrissur district panchayat has earmarked Rs. 20 lakhs for supporting paddy procurement schemes and Rs. 70 lakhs for constructing a `Vijnan Sagar' science and technology museum at Ramavarmapuram in its budget for next year. The budget estimates a revenue of Rs. 26.09 crore including Rs 16.41 crore to be sanctioned by the State Government. The estimated expenditure of the panchayat for the coming year is also Rs 26.09 crores.
Welfare schemes
Out of the Rs 16.41 crores allocated under the State Plan Fund, Rs. 6.71 crores is to be earmarked for Scheduled Caste welfare schemes and Rs. 19.89 lakhs is for Scheduled Tribe welfare programmes.
Rural development fund
In the general category, the allocation is Rs. 9.50 lakhs and this includes Rs. 5.80 lakhs sanctioned as part of the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF). The revenue expected in the budget includes Rs. 4 crores to be received for the Centrally-sponsored schemes, Rs. 1.99 crores for the State-sponsored schemes, Rs. 2.98 as maintenance grant, Rs. 45 lakhs as general purpose grant and Rs. 24 lakhs as own fund.
Watershed development
The budget has earmarked Rs. 37.5 lakhs for watershed development, Rs. 10 lakhs each for the completion of the electronics park and for starting the diamond institute at Vellarakkad, Rs. 83 lakh for new minor irrigation projects and Rs. 109 lakhs for completing the lift irrigation schemes which have been started. The budget has also allocated Rs. 15 lakhs for industrial development, Rs. 20 lakhs for completion of school buildings, Rs. 50 lakhs for construction of new buildings and Rs. 15 lakhs for the integrated education development programmes. Other budget allocations include Rs. 250 lakhs for constructing 500 houses for the Scheduled Caste sections, Rs. 54 lakhs for women employment training, Rs. 15 lakhs for cultural development projects and Rs. 10 lakh for sports-related schemes. The budget was presented by the panchayat vice-president, M. S. Moideen, at the meeting presided over by the president, N. K. Subramanian.
