Most shops remain closed in Uttaranchal

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN, MARCH 31. Most commercial establishments in Uttaranchal remained closed for the second day today to protest against the new Value Added Tax (VAT) regime even as the Government said that it would introduce VAT only after detailed discussions with experts and businessmen.

"VAT is not something through which we will draw political mileage. It is a new tax regime and efforts will be made to make the State's legislation on the subject as user friendly as possible," the Uttaranchal Forest and Urban Development Minister and chairman of the Cabinet sub committee on VAT, Nav Prabhat said.

Meanwhile a good number of vegetable and fruits sellers were back to business as their goods would perish if not sold immediately.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has sought a debate on VAT in the Assembly and formation of a committee comprising of all political parties, trade representatives and taxation experts so that a viable legislation could be suggested.
