Uttaranchal
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN, MARCH 31. The Uttaranchal Chief Minister, Narayan Dutt Tiwari has called upon the people to adopt earthquake resistant measures while making new domestic or commercial buildings. The people living in old buildings should also strengthen them and the banks should provide low interest loans for this work as Uttaranchal lay in a highly seismic zone.
Expressing concern over the devastations caused by earthquakes in the State in the recent past and the massive quake that hit Indonesia on Monday, Mr. Tiwari directed officials and elected panchayat representatives to ensure that new constructions fulfilled the required safety parameters as suggested by experts.
He directed municipal and development authority officials to immediately conduct a survey to identify weak building structures in densely populated areas including villages and initiate moves to make them safer.
Civil engineering experts however feel that safety parameters could not be easily enforced on the poor or lower middle class as the cost of additional reinforcement through beams and columns was an expensive affair.
