Compensation for farmers

ALAPPUZHA MARCH 31.MARCH 31.MA The Alappuzha district administration will take immediate steps to distribute Rs. 6.84 crores allotted by the Government to those farmers who suffered losses in natural calamities, the District Collector, K.R. Muraleedharan, has said. A sum of Rs. 3.45 crores had been handed over to the Agriculture Department to distribute to farmers who suffered losses in last year's drought, the Collector said. In addition to this, a sum of Rs. 24 lakhs had been given to the Department to distribute to those farmers who suffered losses in the flood occurred in 2003 and 2004, the Collector said. The remaining amount would also be soon allotted to various departments for distribution to those who suffered losses from natural calamities.

IFDP plea

KANNUR MARCH 31.MARCH 31.MA The Indian Federal Democratic Party (IFDP) has urged the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, to allow a Congress Minister to handle the Revenue and Law portfolios in the best interests of the State. The IFDP State general secretary, Jose Chemberi, said in a statement here today that there should be an impartial inquiry into the alleged land encroachment in the State after the United Democratic Front Government came to power. He urged Mr. Chandy to cancel the appointment of Government Pleaders.

`Traders' stir

anti-people'

KOZHIKODE MARCH 31.MARCH 31.MA The Federation of Consumer Organisations, Kerala, (FOCOK) has said that the hartal being organised by the traders should not turn anti-people. At a meeting here today, the organisation leaders said that appropriate action should be taken against traders who downed shutters and waylaid goods vehicles. The strike against VAT was not totally justified, they said.

child labour

A team of officials of the Labour Department has intensified their campaign against child labour. The team is led by the district labour officer and included all assistant labour officers. The public can bring any instances of child labour to the Department's notice by contacting Ph: 2370538 (District Labour Officer, Kozhikode) or 1098 (Child Line phone, toll free), the district labour officer said.

Peace march

The State committee of the Ithihadu Shubbanil Mujahideen (ISM) will conduct a march from Uppala in Kasaragod on April 1, a release from ISM general secretary said here. The march is being held to spread the message of peace and goodwill. The Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) State secretary, T. Aboobacker Farooqui, will inaugurate the march. The march will end in Thiruvananthapuram on April 30.
