THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 31. The State Cabinet today decided to revive the proposal for Kannur airport project that has been languishing for some years now without political partronage. Announcing the Cabinet's "in principle" clearance for the project, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, told mediapersons that the Cabinet had decided to appoint K. Kesavan, managing director of the Bekkal Tourism Development Corporation, as special officer for the Kannur Airport Project, which requires more than 1,000 acres. He said 207 acres had been acquired for the project. He said that the Union Civil Aviation Ministry did not take a favourable view about the airport when his Government had taken it up with it. The project proposals gathered momentum after a detailed discussions held at a meeting attended by the MLAs, the Member of Parliament representing Kannur, and Capt. Krishnan Nair, promoter of Leela Group. Mr. Chandy said he himself had taken up the matter with the Union Civil Aviation Minister. The State Government had decided to back the project considering the importance that the area was going to get on account of the Bekkal Tourism Project.
