KOLLAM, MARCH 31. The Rajya Sabha member N.K. Premachandran and several other people's representatives find themselves as accused in two criminal cases before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court here. The cases have been charged against them for blocking trains at Paravur and Sasthamcotta railway stations in October last year. Mr. Premachandran and others had led a blockade in protest against the withdrawal of halts of some trains at these stations. While more than 3,000 persons took part in the blockade at Paravur, over 5,000 participated in the stir at Sasthamcotta. The blockade at Paravur was in protest against the withdrawal of the halt of Jayanti Janata Express and at Sasthamcotta it was against the withdrawal of Island Express' halt. This had put office-goers and students in the two townships and nearby areas to hardship. Mr. Premachandran inaugurated both the blockades. The issue became so serious that the District Collector had to intervene and following talks, the Railway authorities reinstated the halts. But the cases have not been withdrawn yet. Mr. Premachandran has called upon the State Government to withdraw the case considering the `merit' of the agitation. Those figuring in the cases include the Kunnathur MLA, Kovur Kunjumon; the chairman of Paravur municipal council, Sudhir Chellappan; the Mynagapally panchayat president, Y.A. Samad; and others.
