THRISSUR, MARCH 31. The Cochin Devaswom Board's budget for 2005-06 has earmarked Rs.3.54 crores for the development of temples under it. According to a press release received here today, the Board will spend Rs.1.14 crores for temple renovation works to be undertaken by it directly and Rs.2.14 crores for temple development activities to be implemented in collaboration with respective temple welfare councils. The budget shows a revenue of Rs.45.873 crores and an expenditure of Rs.45.573 crores, a surplus of Rs.30 lakhs. Under the debt head, the budget shows a revenue of Rs.20.593 crores and an expenditure of Rs.21.3175 crores, a deficit of Rs.72.45 lakhs. Here, the Board expects to raise Rs.2 crores from the rent of new shops and securities and donations from the tenants. A sum of Rs.2.25 crores is to be raised as bank loan for the constructions.
Construction
The Board has earmarked Rs.4.03 crores for various construction activities being undertaken. These include shopping complexes at Thrissur East and West Pallithamam, Pazhayannur, Asokeswaram, Ernakulam, Vytila and Thripunithura and marriage halls at Azhakiyakavu temple and West Pallithamam. The Board will implement all the directions of the Government for the protection and welfare of the elephants under it. An amount of Rs.25 lakhs has been earmarked for this. The renovation of Thripunithura temple will be given high priority. Steps will be taken to augment drinking water and accommodation facilities for devotees at Chottanikara temple. The budget has allocated Rs.25 lakhs each for the development of Thrissur Kerala Varma College and Kunnamkulam Vivekananda College. A scheme will be implemented for the beautification of Thekkinkadu Maidan in collaboration with the Tourism Department. A project for the renovation of the `gopurams' of Vadakkunnathan temple will be taken up with the help of the Union Archaeology Department.
