By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, MARCH 31. The Second Additional District and Sessions Court Judge, K.D. Deshpande, sentenced Sharanappa, accused of murdering his wife, to life imprisonment. Sharanappa, a resident of Panjinamogaru, murdered his wife, Meenakshi, at Bajpe, where he took her on the pretext of showing her the airport.

Sharanappa, who is said to have suspected the fidelity of Meenakshi, reportedly took her to a desolate spot and murdered her. He later lodged a complaint with Mangalore North (Bunder) police that he had gone with Meenakshi to a theatre and that she walked out during the interval and was missing since then. A few days later, a woman's body was found near a hillock at Bajpe.

The police investigating the case were able to solve it based on a note found at the site.

Mr. Deshpande not only sentenced Sharanappa to life imprisonment, but also ordered him to undergo additional imprisonment of one year and imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 for trying to cover up the murder.

Udayashanker argued for the prosecution.

Sentenced

The Principal District and Sessions Judge, G.V. Hegde, has sentenced B. Seena Poojary (41) of Kemraje village in Sullia taluk to life imprisonment for murdering his wife, Geeta, on April 16, 2004. The accused was living with Geeta and their three-year-old son at Bommaru in Nallakemraje village in Sullia taluk.

The Public Prosecutor, J.I. Kittur, said here on Thursday that Seena used to pawn his wife's jewellery for money.

When Geeta refused to part with her jewellery on the fateful day, Seena attacked her with a sickle.

Mr. Kittur said Seena then left the body in his house and fled. He later lodged a complaint with the Sullia police claiming that a gang had murdered his wife and stolen her jewellery. Mr. Kittur said the police, who suspected Seena, arrested him based on the statements given by the relatives of the victim.

The police also recovered the jewellery hidden by the accused in a broken suitcase in a shed adjacent to their house. Mr. Kittur said he relied on evidence given by the Geeta's mother during the hearing. Besides life imprisonment, the court directed Seena to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 or undergo simple imprisonment of one month in case of default.

In addition, the court directed the accused to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment for destroying evidence and lodging a false complaint with the police. The accused has also been directed to pay a fine of Rs. 500 or undergo a month's simple imprisonment in case of default. All these sentences shall run concurrently, Mr. Kittur said.
