Kilpauk cemetery closed

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 31. The century-old Kilpauk Cemetery in the city will be closed for further burial from tomorrow. A notice has been displayed in front of the cemetery informing the people about the cemetery's closure.

Meanwhile, the Madras Cemeteries Board, in charge of the cemetery, has written to the Government requesting it to allot land to the Board for its use. There were about 45,000 to 50,000 graves in the 16-acre cemetery and more than three lakh bodies had been buried so far. On an average, six to seven bodies were interred every day in the last five years.

It had also sought the Corporation's permission for installing a crematorium inside the cemetery. Family members would be given locker facilities at the cemetery to keep the ashes of their relatives after the cremation.

A section of the Christian population in the city opposed the Board's decision to set up a crematorium for cremating the bodies stating that it was against the custom and ritual. However, the Board said that the decision was informed well in advance by issuing notices to those who came to the cemetery.
