Councillor alleges scam in waste management

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 31 . After blowing the whistle on overpricing of accessories for streetlights, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Councillor, K. Anandakumar, today alleged a scam in waste management.

He said that false claims on trips by waste-laden trucks to the compost yard were made to swindle the Corporation of nearly Rs. 1 crore.

During Zero Hour in the Council today, he said that while private tipper-lorries ferrying waste actually made only 70-75 trips a day, bills claiming nearly 150 trips were submitted to the officials by the operator.

Besides, these trucks never stuck to the rule that they offload the waste only in the compost yard at Vellalore. Instead, they dumped it at the transfer stations within the city. The City Health Officer, M. Raghupathy, explained that tractors dumped waste at the stations, which were then put into the trucks bound for the yard. Mr. Anandakumar made it clear that his charge was only against the tipper-lorries and not the tractors.

Probe demanded

The councillor then charged the lorry operator with furnishing bills claiming that trips were made up to the yard, even though the waste was dumped at the transfer stations. Demanding a probe, he claimed that he had proof of the malpractice and declared he would resign if the charges were proved false.

The Mayor, T. Malaravan, asked him to submit all the proof to the Deputy Commissioner of the Corporation, M. Rahim, for inquiry.

To this, the councillors appealed to the Mayor to ensure there was no delay in the probe. At the same time, the probe should not hold up waste disposal as in the case of streetlights.

The Congress Councillor, `Colony' R. Venkatachalam, said that the probe into the alleged malpractice in purchase of streetlight accessories had led to delay in awarding contract for maintenance of lights. This, in turn, had plunged the city into darkness. If the same problem were to happen with regard to waste disposal, the whole city would stink.
