Coimbatore
By M. Soundariya Preetha
COIMBATORE, MARCH 31 . Coimbatore region boasts of around 10,000 graduates passing out of 25 engineering institutions every year. Apart from these, there are a number of arts and science colleges that can cater to the workforce requirement of the Information Technology (IT) firms.
Technical talent
With this vast pool of technical talent, Coimbatore is looked at as an emerging IT destination. The announcement by some of the major IT firms to set shop here has raised hopes of the region seeing more major IT players coming here. Cognizant Technology Solutions, a U.S.-based information technology solutions provider, is the latest to announce its foray into Coimbatore. "The visibility of Coimbatore will go up in the global map," says an entrepreneur. The entry of big IT firms will generate a lot of employment opportunities not only in the IT sector but also in support services, the former chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Coimbatore Zone, V. Paramasivam, said. "The general economy of the region will improve." He said that the IT and IT enabled services (ITES) companies here now were mostly small (with less than 5,000 employees each). Looking out for more opportunities, a large number of candidates hence were going to other cities. Mr. Paramasivam said that with big companies coming here, these candidates would find jobs in the city itself. This would anyway not affect firms from other cities hiring workforce from Coimbatore. With regard to the small units already in existence, he said that more middle-level talent would be available. Usually, a number of employees in IT companies here would want to go to cities such as Chennai and Bangalore after gaining one or two years of experience. Now, the talent could be retained in Coimbatore. However, some of the entrepreneurs expressed concern at the infrastructure available.
Infrastructure problems
The CII - Coimbatore Zone, Chairperson, Nandini Rangasamy, points out that infrastructure problems, especially those related to roads, should be addressed. Further, the Coimbatore IT Park works have to be expedited so that more major IT companies come to Coimbatore.
