Madurai
By Our Staff Reporter
MADURAI, MARCH 31. Employees and development officers of the Life Insurance Corporation of India in the southern districts struck work today, demanding wage enhancement commensurate with growth of the corporation. The strike paralysed functioning of offices in Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Theni districts coming under the Madurai division, according to the striking employees. The strike was in response to a nationwide call given by All-India Insurance Employees' Association, National Federation of Insurance Field Workers of India, National Insurance Employees Organisation and All India Life Insurance Employees' Association to press for wage revision from August 1, 2002 and condemning the negative conditions proposed during negotiations. Later, the members, led by the Madurai divisional union president, C. Chandrasekaran, and the general secretary, G. Menakshi Sundaram, staged a demonstration in front of the divisional office here in support of their demand.
Dindigul
About 173 employees including 37 women of the LIC struck work in Dindigul, Palani and Batlagundu, demanding revision of pay and protesting against increase in foreign investments in the insurance sector. They also appealed to the Centre to fill vacancies in the Corporation. A section of employees, led by the LIC Employees Association secretary, K. Barath, staged a demonstration in front of the Division I office.
