THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. March 31. The city police arrested six persons who tried to organise a protest in front of the Hotel Mascot just before the arrival there this evening of the Maldivian President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. According to the police, the youth were arrested when they hoisted a banner, outside the hotel, demanding religious freedom in the Maldives. Police also seized five other similar banners from the youth who belong to a Pentecostal group in the city.
Held on bribery charge
The Assistant Executive Engineer in charge of the Kozhikode and Chelanoor blocks, K. Kanappan, was arrested today by a Vigilance team in Kozhikode while accepting a bribe of Rs. 1,000 from a contractor for passing a bill. He is a native of Kanjirampara in Thiruvananthapuram.
