VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 31. All branches of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India did not function with employees going on strike to press for their demand for higher salaries. Members of the All-India Insurance Employees' Union took out rallies from their respective branches and staged a dharna in front of the Jeevan Krishna Building on Besant Road. The union's divisional vice-president, I.V.Tulasi Rao, said in statement that the demands of the employees were in tune with the increase in workload but the management and Government were not conceding. Vacancies in Class 3 and 4 employees should be filed immediately, he demanded. Meanwhile, a statement from rival organisation, the All-India LIC Employees' Federation, said that members of their association attended their duties in some branches. Cash counters in all the branches did not function despite federation employees attending duties. Insurance agents and policyholders who wanted to make payments of premium on the last day of the financial year were put to tremendous inconvenience. The federation secretary, T Sambasiva Rao, said the strike targeted policyholders with several of them losing money and some losing their policy itself.
