VIJAYAWADA, MARCH 31. One of the biggest divisions in the city, the Division-1 of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) presents a picture of negligence in many respects. Residents of this division are faced lack of good roads and drainage system. In many residential areas, overflowing of open drains makes life miserable. The fastest-developing areas like Bhavanipuram fall in this division, which, however, sees no corresponding improvement of amenities. With a population of over 40,000, the division has been witnessing steady increase in the number of residential colonies every year. The division has five elementary schools including an Urdu medium school. But what is visibly lacking is a high school. Students have to go to the Zilla Parishad High School located in the adjoining 3rd division.

Drainage problem

Drainage emanating from the RTC Workshop located in Vidyadharapuram poses another major problem for the residents. There has been a long-pending demand for laying an underground line to divert this drainage but all their pleas have fallen on deaf ears and there is no effort to find an alternative.

"In rainy season, it literally gives a harrowing time for all of us. The roads get inundated and drain water is there everywhere. We cannot even step out of our homes and nobody seems interested in rectifying the situation," says Madhusudan Rao, a private school teacher from the Fourth Cross Road area. Open drains in the division have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes resulting incidence of fever. There is the drinking water problem also. Many residents are forced to depend on public taps installed by the corporation.

Police outpost

With growing number of cases of harassment of women and accidents, the residents of Swathi Centre area feel that there is a need for a police outpost.
