HYDERABAD, MARCH 31. Learning Telugu is fun here. Children play with rhyming words and weave a poem out of them. They learn letters through familiar words, rather than learning them in isolation. `Padpandiri', as the methodology is called, imparts Telugu in three stages. In the first phase, vowels and consonants (aksharalu) are taught. In the second phase, `matras' are introduced and in the third phase they learn to blend. The learning strategy being adopted by the Dr. Reddy's Child And Police-SCOPE programme is proving to be effective in 60 Government primary schools in the mandals of Balanagar, Secunderabad and Musheerabad. On Thursday, students of these schools gave a demonstration of their skills at Spandana-2005 organised in coordination with the Education Department. Gurpreet K. Bhatia, Director, Child And Police (CAP), told presspersons that the project tried to address the existing deficits in language skills. In the new strategy, 40 words are identified, which a child uses in his day-to-day life and which can be easily picturised. The implementation had shown promising results. The rate of absenteeism in schools also dropped, said Venkatram Reddy, Deputy Inspector of Schools, Balanagar.
Good response
Shila Ramkrishnan, team leader, Learning Improvement Programme, said the interactive and participative approach was evoking a good response from both children and teachers.
