Drive against roadside eateries from today

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 31. In the backdrop of the outbreak of jaundice in parts of the old city, the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) will launch a drive against roadside eateries and establishments storing or serving food in unhygienic conditions from Friday.

The civic body, which has six food inspectors and 50-odd sanitary supervisors, has decided to form two teams to monitor and take action against eateries that keep food uncovered and fail to ensure hygienic conditions.

The drive mainly aims at targeting roadside kiosks offering `chat,' `pani puri', `mirchi bajji' and other snacks. "Most of these joints don't keep the food covered and hygiene is the last thing they ensure. Apart from being exposed to dust, the food is exposed to flies which could make it harmful," a food inspector said.

The teams, like in last year, would immediately destroy such food seized during the drive. The facilities for cleaning utensils also would be monitored and action initiated against those using a single bucket of water to clean the spoons, plates and glasses by dipping in it. "This needs to be checked as these unhygienic practices lead to health problems," he said.

This being summer, the initiative also intends to keep a watchful eye on stale food being served. "We will pick the food items randomly and test them for use of colouring agents in violation of prescribed guidelines."

Last year's drive conducted at the behest of the then Additional Commissioner, G.Malsur, saw food inspectors cracking down on eateries and booking almost 50 cases. "Since there is no permanent address for roadside eateries that operate from pushcarts, we find it hard to pursue cases against them. Hence, we destroy food material seized from such joints," the food inspector said. The MCH currently has about 157 cases going against different food joints, restaurants and hotels in the city and most of these pertain to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act deviations.
