KOCHI, MARCH 31. Delegates, including mayors and urban planning experts, have started reaching the city for the World Mayors' Conference that is to begin here on April 2. Those who reached the city included the Mayor of Lusaka, Christina V. Pauline, and the vice-president of the Commonwealth Forum for Local Self-Government, David Shakespeare. The Union Urban Development Minister, Gulam Nabi Azad, will inaugurate the conference. Nearly 75 mayors from India and 40 from abroad are expected to attend the meet. The organisers have made arrangements for taking the delegates interested in watching cricket to the India-Pakistan match to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium on April 2. A heritage tour for the guests has also been arranged. Group discussions will be held on April 3. C.M. Dinesh Mani, Kochi Mayor, will host a dinner for the guests in the evening. Several cultural programmes have also been organised. A `Cochin Declaration' will be made on April 4 at a meeting to be held at 11 a.m. The Union E.T. Mohammad Basheer, Education Minister, is expected to attend the session. R.L. Bhatia, Governor, Kumari Shelja, Union Minister, and Therambil Ramakrishnan, Speaker, are expected to attend various sessions.
