KOCHI, MARCH 31. Owners of timber industries and sawmills have said they would close down their units on Friday alleging that the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) regime would kill the industry that was already in a stupor owing to heavy tax rates even under the old regime. V.M. Aliyar, president of the All Kerala Sawmillers and Timber Industries Association, told a press conference here on Thursday that veneer and plywood-makers who used items like rubber wood should not be brought under the VAT regime. The Association had submitted memoranda to the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister raising this point, said Mr. Aliyar. He also said that the Association morally backed the strike by the Kerala Vyapari Vyvasayi Ekopana Samithy. C. K. Abdul Majeed, president, Kerala State Plywood Manufacturers' Association president, also participated in the press conference.
