BANGALORE, MARCH 31. By hiring 160 Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses in the just-concluded academic year, schools and colleges in the city kept 7,138 vehicles off the road and prevented the release of 5,784 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The BMTC Managing Director, Upendra Tripathi, says over 30 schools and colleges and Bangalore University hired the buses. In a statement here on Thursday, Mr. Tripathi said the buses decongested the roads surrounding the schools and colleges. As many as 7,138 parents stopped the use of their vehicles as their children started using the BMTC buses. This prevented release of 5,784 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Agrees Sister Sandhya S.N.D., Principal of Sophia's School in the High Grounds area. She says the hiring of the BMTC buses has helped reduce the congestion on the road near her school. Her school being closer to the Vidhana Soudha, many cars used by the parents of the children were affecting the traffic. The new measure has helped ease vehicle congestion to some extent, she says. He says the BMTC will honour the principals of 13 schools on Friday for hiring its buses. The BMTC offers the buses at the rate of Rs. 14.50 a km during peak hours and Rs. 12.50 a km during non-peak hours, says Mr. Tripathi.
