A good singer should have a distinctive voice: Devarajan

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, APRIL 1. The veteran playback musician, G. Devarajan, has said that a good number of the younger generation singers have failed to give an identity to their voice.

At a meet-the-press programme here today, Mr. Devarajan said that while in the past on hearing a song, one could easily identify the singer, such an identification has become impossible while listening to the songs rendered by the younger generation singers of Malayalam film songs. Having a voice with an identity of its own is a prime characteristic of a good singer, he said.

Mr. Devarajan said that in his career he had handled more than 96 ragas. His own native place Paravur has considerable influence while tuning a couple of popular songs. These include `kaattadichu kodumkaattadichu... ' and `saranamayyappa swamy saranamayyappa... .'

Award presented

The veteran musician said that he is in love with all the songs he had tuned and that is because he had taken real pains in tuning each song. He had tuned songs for 340 Malayalam films, 12 Tamil films and 39 Malayalam dramas. He said that payment is still due to him from 31 Malayalam films. Mr. Devarajan is camping here since the past four days for attending the `Devaragolsavam' festival organised in his honour by the Kadappakada Sports Club and Reading Room. This evening at a public function held at the Swaralaya Open Air Auditorium, he was presented the Pattathuvila Karunakaran Memorial Award for his contributions in the form of melodious Malayalam songs.
