Tirunelveli
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, APRIL 1. A three-member team from the Medical Council of India today inspected the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital to ascertain if the institution has got enough infrastructure to provide quality medical education for 150 students in the first-year MBBS course. The members of the team Dr. Vandhana Khanolkar, Dr. A. Choudhry and Dr. Manjunath descended on the premises of the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in the morning and went round various wards of the hospital, which caters to the needs of patients from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts. The team also visited the library of the college and other facilities, including laboratories of various departments and other equipment. It also held discussions with the Dean, R. Saraswathi, and the Heads of various departments and the faculty members in batches. After the number of seats in the first-year MBBS course of the college was increased from 100 to 150 two years ago, the MCI sent a team to the college and its hospital to inspect whether the State Government had augmented the infrastructure also to cater to the needs of 50 more students. Since it was then found that the Department of Health had `imported' doctors and other laboratory equipment from other medical colleges, the MCI's nod for the increased seats was put on hold. Since the Department of Health has appointed "significant number of doctors" on a contract basis in a bid to get the MCI's approval for the increased seats, the college administration here feels that there will not be any hitch. The team is expected to visit the Primary Health Centre at Pattamadai and the Urban Health Post of Tirunelveli Corporation at Kandiyaperi tomorrow, as these two centres are part of the field training being imparted to the budding doctors of the TVMC, the sources said.
