KOLKATA, APRIL 1. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has resumed its search for oil and gas in the Bengal Offshore after a gap of 15 years. Sources said the well, awarded under the NELP II, is off the Sundarbans. The ONGC has already spent Rs. 175 crores in 3D seismic survey, data processing and interpretations on this block and the expectations were high. The sources said the targeted depth of the well is 5,000 metres. "The exploratory operations would go on till August, although a find was possible earlier,'' according to the sources. In the first phase, the investment on the four wells planned would be over Rs. 400 crores. The corporation had failed to make any significant find during its last exploratory drilling in the late 1980s in the Bay of Bengal, making it go for low-key activities this time.
