KURNOOL, APRIL 1. Launching of Value Added Tax (VAT) generated a lot of humour here on Friday. The former MLA, T.G. Venkatesh, asked traders not to mistake VAT 2005 to VAT 69 (popular liquor brand). Referring to the notes of the "nadaswaram'' in the background while the lamp was being lit, Mr. Venkatesh said not all traders were wedded to the VAT 2005 whether they liked it or not. Mr. Venkatesh said tax officials always behaved like overbearing husbands, while traders became submissive wives. He wanted the officials not to treat traders as offenders. The president of the District Chamber of Commerce, Vijayakumar Reddy, described the "wedding'' as child marriage and requested the tax officials to postpone at least the "nuptial night'' until the bride was grown up, implying that VAT was in a nascent stage and traders should be given some freedom until they understood the implications.
