Mercenaries' sentences reduced

Kabul: An Afghan court substantially cut the jail sentences of the American mercenary, Jack Idema, and his two accomplices on Thursday, but refused to overturn their conviction for kidnap and torture. Idema, his right-hand man Brent Bennett, and Edward Caraballo, a journalist, were found guilty last September of running a freelance operation to catch and interrogate Al-Qaeda suspects. Eight Afghan detenus, including a judge, said they were imprisoned for days in a private jail, hung from the ceiling and doused with scalding water. Thursday's closed-door hearing reduced Idema and Bennett's 10-year sentences to five and three years respectively. Caraballo, an Emmy-winning documentary maker from New York, had his term cut from eight years to two. Idema, a 48-year-old former Green Beret, claimed that he was on a secret U.S. Government mission to track down the Al-Qaeda members, including Osama bin Laden. —
