Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 1. The Pondicherry Assembly today witnessed noisy scenes for ten minutes during Question Time with a section of the ruling Congress legislators and DMK members criticising the Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran. The House was dealing with a question raised by A Anbalagan (AIADMK) on the mosquito menace in the Union Territory. The member from the Uppalam constituency said around 500 persons were afflicted with filariasis and wanted the administration to initiate steps to desilt the sewage canal. At one stage the R. Siva (DMK) rose to say something about the problem in his constituency of Orleanpet even as the AIADMK member was on his feet. The Speaker asked Mr. Siva to wait till Mr. Anbalagan finished his speech. Mr Siva became indignant and started making comments. R.Kamalakannan (Congress) also rose from his seat to say that the Speaker was giving Mr.Anbalagan more than time to speak. The Speaker said he was conducting the House as per his conscience and there could be no room for complaint. The House was drowned in noise with the Opposition members and Mr Kamalakannan criticising the Speaker. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, tried to restore calm.
