Golf
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, APRIL 1. S.S.P. Chaurasia's brave hitting, coupled with a fortuitous `eagle', saw him soar over the rest of the field on the second day of the Rs. 50-lakh PSPB Open golf tournament at the Delhi Golf Club here on Friday. Chaurasia, more in the news for having met with four accidents in the space of a year and a half, fired a six-under par 66 to head the leaderboard with a two-round aggregate of 135. On a day when overnight leader Gaurav Ghei slipped to the joint fifth spot after a round of 73, Tour leader Mukesh Kumar shot the day's best 65 to move within a stroke of Chaurasia. In the third place was Feroz Ali who followed his opening day's 67 with a 70. When the `cut' came at seven-over 151, Shiv Kapur `scraped' through after following a thorny path that saw him triple-bogey the sixth hole in his commendable card of 69 that included eight birdies. Remember, the young rookie shot an 82 on the first day. Jeev Milkha Singh also made it by shooting a 69 after a poor 77 on Friday. Amritinder Singh, Harinder Gupta, Indrajit Bhalotia were among those who failed to make it. Chaurasia whose double-bogey on the eighth hole was sandwiched between two birdies, played like a man possessed once he took the turn.
The scores: S.S.P. Chaurasia (69, 66) 135; Mukesh Kumar (71, 65) 136; Feroz Ali (67, 70) 137; Gaganjit Bhullar (A) (68, 70) 138; Rafick Ali (71, 68), Ashok Kumar (69, 70), Amandeep Johl (67, 72), Gaurav Ghei (66, 73) 139; Gast Ram (71, 69), Digvijay Singh (69, 71), Simarjeet Singh (A) (69, 71) 140; Ajeetesh Sandhu (72, 70), Arjun Singh (70, 72) 142; Wisut Artjanawat (Tha) (72, 71) 143 and Ranjit Singh (71, 73) 144.
