PATHANAMTHITTA, APRIL 1. The first Episcopal Synod of the Malankara Catholic Church came to a close at the Cherupushpagiri Aramana in Thiruvalla today. The Major Archbishop and Catholicos of the Church, Cyril Mar Baselius, presided over the three-day Synod. According to an official statement of the Church, the Synod constituted different commissions on evangelism, liturgy and ecumenism. The name of the commission members would be announced at the second Synod to be held in Thiruvananthapuram on April 10. The Synod also decided to construct a Church headquarters with modern facilities at the Pattom St Mary's Cathedral premises in Thiruvananthapuram. The Synod secretary and the Muvttupuzha Bishop, Thomas Mar Koorilos, the Auxiliary Bishop of Thiruvananthapuram, Joshua Mar Ignatius, and other bishops Geevarghese Mar Themotheos, Isaac Mar Cleemis, (Thiruvalla), Geevarghese Mar Divananseus (Batherry), Youhanon Mar Chrysostom (Marthandom) and the newly ordained bishop, Joseph Mar Thomas, attended the Synod. Mar Baselius also solemnised a special prayer for the ailing Pope John Paul-II at the Cherupushpagiri Aramana this morning.
